In that sense, it is a major expansion of what the Psychonauts OST started. Psychonauts 2 also provided many opportunities to explore new genres of music, like Big Band jazz, orchestral music, and psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll. I went through a phase of just working out themes for the new characters on the piano and sending them to the team before turning them into fully orchestrated pieces. Also, with Psychonauts 2, there were so many new characters. I used some of the original melodies for characters that had appeared in Psychonauts, but with new instrumental settings. I worked on it for close to 5 years, on and off. How long were you working on the Psychonauts 2 OST? Did you carry over any ideas from the original game? A good example would be the milkman music that used a theremin sound I created on the Kurzweil K-2000. I was able to tap into that using a few live instruments and some off-the-wall synth sounds. So, when it came to creating the Psychonauts OST, I think its strong point was its quirkiness, which flowed from the quirkiness of the characters. Sound-wise, we had to make the most of some pretty humble hardware. The tech was so basic in those early days that we had to focus on things like memorable characters and melodies in titles like The Curse of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. Psychonauts came out of a tradition that Tim Schafer and I inherited from having worked at LucasArts in the 1990’s. What made the original Psychonauts OST so unique in your opinion? I think it still has a lot of personality. If I could change anything, I would definitely have more live musicians, but I wouldn’t change the essence of the music. All of my composing and recording was done in the small cottage I was renting in Berkeley. In those days, Double Fine literally worked out of a garage, so we had to be creative. Psychonauts was my first gig as an independent composer, and it was Double Fine’s first title. I’m proud of the original Psychonauts score, especially given what we had to work with at the time. How do you feel the original Psychonauts OST has held up? Do you still enjoy it and would you make any changes to it if you could?
